Opened in July 2023, this hotel is a striking addition to Singapore's bustling landscape, blending contemporary design with the charm of historic shophouses. As a frequent traveler and a fan of the Mondrian brand, I was eager to experience this particular outpost, and I can confidently say it did not disappoint.

Location and Accessibility

Mondrian Singapore Duxton is conveniently situated just a stone's throw from the Central Business District, making it an ideal base for both leisure and business travelers. The hotel sits on the quieter side of Chinatown, allowing guests to enjoy the Lion City’s eclectic dining and drinking scene without the hustle and bustle commonly associated with the area. With Maxwell MRT station nearby, attractions like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay are easily accessible, making it a prime spot for exploration.

The Arrival Experience

Upon arrival at the hotel, I was greeted warmly by the concierge who guided me to the reception area located on the third floor. The lobby is an artistic masterpiece, featuring a striking design that pays homage to Singapore's colonial architecture. A stunning skylight drenched in greenery welcomes guests into the heart of the hotel, where the flagship restaurant, Bottega di Carna, creates a dynamic ambiance. 

The reception area is adorned with captivating artworks that intrigue as you check in, setting the tone for a memorable stay.

Accommodations

With a total of 302 rooms, each offering unique views of the historic shophouses and the modern skyline, Mondrian Singapore Duxton manages to maintain an intimate boutique feel. During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Duxton View King room, which featured floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with natural light. The decor combined shades of green, gold, and beige, creating a serene atmosphere that felt both luxurious and inviting.

The room was equipped with a Lavazza coffee machine, a well-stocked minibar, and a large flat-screen TV, offering all the comforts of home. The bathroom was equally impressive, showcasing a beautiful green marble sink and high-end Malin+Goetz amenities, adding to the overall luxurious experience.

For those seeking a more spacious option, the Shophouse Suites are a must-try. These suites pay tribute to the local architectural style, featuring vaulted ceilings and minimalistic interiors that highlight the shophouse’s signature elements. Each suite is designed with comfort in mind, making it a perfect retreat after a day of exploration.

Dining and Drinking

At Mondrian Singapore Duxton, dining is an experience in itself. The flagship restaurant, Bottega di Carna, helmed by renowned butcher Dario Cecchini, is a meat lover’s paradise. The restaurant features an open kitchen and a display of prime cuts of meat that will entice your senses.

Breakfast is a highlight, with a buffet offering everything from local delicacies to international favorites, and the option to order from a menu for specialties like Eggs Benedict.

Jungle Ballroom, the hotel’s cocktail bar serves inventive cocktails that trace several routes around Asia, highlighting local ingredients from different cities around Asia, from Macau to Mumbai, from Bangkok to Siem Reap, making it a perfect spot for a night out. Helmed by seasoned mixologists Akmal Haqim and Adrian Besa, the bar is open until 2am, ensuring the party continues well into the night.

For a more relaxed vibe, Christina’s offers artisanal coffee during the day and transitions into a wine bar in the evenings. With its welcoming atmosphere, it is ideal for casual meetings or leisurely catch-ups. The Canyon Club, the hotel’s rooftop pool club, provides a scenic backdrop against the city skyline, where guests can enjoy refreshing cocktails and light bites while lounging by the infinity pool.

Separate from the hotel, but still housed within it, Araya is the world’s first and only Chilean Michelin-starred restaurant, helmed my partner duo Francisco Araya and Fernanda Guerrero. The menu spotlights indigenous Chilean ingredients, spanning the Andes Mountains to the ocean’s coast, plus nods to Japanese culture and flavors owed to Chef Araya’s time spent there, where he earned his first Michelin star. Diners can select between two set menu offerings, plus a la carte options that combine the chef’s culinary heritage and travel experiences.

Amenities

One of the standout features of Mondrian Singapore Duxton is its stunning rooftop infinity pool. The pool area is adorned with grapefruit-pink-striped cabana loungers, providing a chic setting to unwind while soaking in breathtaking views of the skyline. The ambiance is relaxed yet still vibrant, making it a perfect escape from the city below.

The fitness center is well-equipped with Technogym essentials, allowing guests to maintain their workout routine while traveling. The design of the gym aligns beautifully with the hotel's aesthetic, creating the ideal space to exercise.

Service Excellence

Service at Mondrian Singapore Duxton is marked by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. General Manager Robert C. Hauck made headlines with his unique hiring philosophy, bringing together a diverse and eclectic team. 

From the friendly reception staff to the attentive waiters at each of the hotel’s F&B outposts, every interaction felt personal and genuine. During my stay, the staff went above and beyond to ensure my experience was exceptional, including providing a place to work and complimentary coffee and tea even after my checkout.

Exploring Duxton Hill

The hotel's location in Duxton Hill offers guests a chance to immerse themselves in one of Singapore's most charming neighborhoods. The area is dotted with heritage shophouses that now house trendy cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. 

Notable spots include the Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple, and a variety of dining options that range from Michelin-starred establishments to contemporary casual eats.
